History of the catholic war veterans and auxillary

How the CWV got started

  • May 15, 1935: Father Higgins, with the Blessing of Bishop Molley of the diocese of Brooklyn, gathered a few WWI veterans and organized the first post of the CWV.
  • May 19, 1935: CWV was incorporated under the laws of the State of New York.
  • May 1935:  Father Higgins journeyed to Rome.  Pope Pius XI bestowed his blessing upon the CWV and blessed the American Papal flags of the CWV.
  • July 1940:  The CWV was officially recognized as a veteran's organization by the VA in Washington D.C.
  • August 17, 1984: President Ronald Reagan signs legislation granting CWV a Congressional Charter, being the 59th group to receive a Federal Charter, expressing deep admiration for the commitment to serve both God and country.
  • April 2, 2021:  The organization recognizes the significant support of the auxiliary and begins doing business as "The Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary of the United States"
  • November 2021: Post 707 opens to serve all of the diocese of central PA that does not have an established CWV post in their parish.

What we do

We, as Catholic War Veterans and Auxiliary, offer support to our fellow veterans, family members, and community by offering fellowship, doing and/or participating in charitable activities, and assisting veterans in getting much needed services that they have earned through their service to their country.
